You have just lost a loved one. It is an extremely difficult time to live.

A little support during a period of mourning is welcome, because in addition to your sadness, the steps you must take following the death leave you little respite.

You have the heavy task of having to close all subscriptions and accounts of the deceased. And now everything is done through the Internet, so without the access codes of each service provider, the test may be more complicated.

You know that the deceased had a Gmail email address. This address, whether it is the primary email address or not, must have been used to open certain accounts and/or subscriptions, so having access to it should be more than useful for future formalities.

How to delete a Gmail mailbox  ?

Once you have the Google Account access and therefore of those of Gmail, you just have to proceed to their simultaneous deletion.

Indeed, the deletion of the account will lead to the deletion of the email address linked to it.

To do this, we invite you to follow the details below:

Open the Gmail inbox of the deceased, then click on the 9 dots square in the upper right corner and select "account on the first row at the top of Google applications.

Select "Data and privacy.

Recovering data before deleting Gmail

Then go to the bottom of the page to the chapter "Data from the apps and services you use.

In the table on the right entitled "Download or delete your datathen click on "Download your data.

A drop-down list showing all the services of the Google account is displayed (including Gmail of course).

You have the possibility to uncheck the ones you don't want to recover data from. This can be a good idea, as deleting unnecessary data, or at least data you are not interested in, will save you valuable download time.

Click on the blue insert at the bottom of the page "Next step then on the similar blue insert on the next page (below) "Create an export.

Google then tells you that this process is very time consuming due to the weight of the data (hence unchecking any service that is not interesting for you).

You will be notified by email when the export is complete, and you can then retrieve the compressed file.

Delete your account

We advise you to wait for the email indicating that the export of the data has been completed and to be in possession of the account data before proceeding with its closure.

All you have to do is click on the following link and go to the bottom of the page in the section : "More options before finally clicking on the link "Delete your Google Account. You will then need to re-enter the account password and click on the two boxes at the bottom reminding you that you are still liable for any outstanding charges on outstanding transactions and asking you to confirm the action you are about to take.

Finally, click on "Delete account at the bottom of the page in the blue box.

The deletion will then become final from that moment on.

Not being able to export your own account data is a bit of a handicap because it is a waste of time.
