Protecting your digital data: a crucial issue in the digital age

On the occasion of the world data backup day which takes place on March 31, we've decided to make you aware of the importance of protecting your digital data.

Data loss is common and can have serious consequences.

In 2023, 30% of computer users lost important data.

➡️ Causes: hardware failure, human error, malware, natural disasters...

The consequences of data loss can be serious:

  • Financial loss: important documents, professional projects...
  • Sentimental loss :  irreplaceable photos, memories...
  • Lost productivity: time and effort required to restore lost data.
  • Invasion of privacy: sensitive information compromised, identity theft.

To make up for it, backup is a simple and effective way to protect your data.

It allows you to create a copy of your important files on an external medium, so that you can restore them if necessary.

The different types of backup solutions

Local backup on an external hard disk or NAS (Network Attached Storage)

The benefits:

✔️ Data is stored locally, which means the user has direct control over access and security.

✔️ Local backups tend to be faster than online backups due to the speed of data transfer over a local network.

✔️ The initial investment in an external hard drive or NAS can be lower than monthly subscriptions to online storage services.

Disadvantages:

❌ Locally stored data is vulnerable to natural disasters, fire, theft, etc.

❌ External hard drives have limited storage capacity, and NAS may require additional investment to increase capacity.

Online backup in the cloud

The benefits:

✔️ Online storage services generally offer advanced redundancy and security features, considerably reducing the risk of data loss.

✔️ Data backed up in the cloud can be accessed from any Internet-connected device, offering great flexibility of access.

✔️ Data stored in the cloud is not affected by local disasters.

Disadvantages:

❌ Data availability depends on the Internet connection, which can be a problem in the event of network failure.

❌ Monthly or annual subscriptions to online storage services entail recurring costs that can add up over the long term.

❌ All data is highly exposed to hacking and can result in complete loss of stored information.

Hybrid backup, combining both solutions.

The benefits:

✔️ By combining local and online backups, users benefit from both the speed of local backups and the redundancy and accessibility of online backups.

✔️ A hybrid approach offers a robust backup strategy and protection regardless of the type of storage chosen.

Disadvantages:

❌ The simultaneous use of local and online backups can lead to additional costs compared to using a single method.

❌ Managing two different backup systems can be more complex than using just one.

The choice between local, online or hybrid backup depends on individual needs in terms of security, availability, cost and convenience. A hybrid approach can often offer the best balance between these factors for many users.

Determine the frequency of your backups

Practical tip: Set aside a slot in your diary each month to back up your data. Then store your backups in a safe place, keeping a copy off-site in case of disaster.

Secure your passwords

  • Use strong, unique passwords for each account:

They must contain at least 12 characters, a combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols.

💡 Tip for remembering your password :

Choose a long, complex sentence that only you know. Avoid phrases that are easy to guess, such as your full name or date of birth.

Take the initials of each word in the sentence.

Example: Charles Perrault's Le Chat Botté was published in 1697.

Password : LCBDCPAP1697.
